The main feature of Downtown Greenwich is Greenwich Avenue. Greenwich Avenue is a beautiful, long road running down from route 1 all the way to Long Island Sound with high end boutiques and many restaurants. It's a pleasure to stroll down whether shopping or browsing and lovely to sit out with a coffee or to have a meal at one of the huge selection of fabulous restaurants. In the Summer, the road is buzzing with diners sitting out in the sun and in the winter, full of people wandering to enjoy the shops or just for a stroll. Greenwich Ave is right in the middle of Greenwich at the southern side of the town, near to the water. It's a fabulous asset for the whole town to use and people from outside of Greenwich will also come to the Ave to stroll and eat. At the bottom of the Ave is Greenwich Station, which is the main station in Greenwich, with fast trains to Grand Central as well as ample parking. Also at the bottom of the Ave is Long Island Sound and the Bruce Museum. The Bruce Museum has recently has a major reconstruction and enlargement and recently re-opened - it is a fabulous museum for kids and adults alike. Right by the Bruce Museum is a huge park called Bruce Park. Bruce Park has a wonderful playground as well as tennis courts and is a great park to walk, bike or jog. At the bottom of the Ave, opposite the Delamer Hotel, it's also possible to catch a 10 minute ferry to two islands that are owned by the town of Greenwich and accessible for Greenwich Residents. One of these islands has a public beach and concession and is lovely to spend time in the Summer with ferries running every half hour. The other island is deserted and Greenwich Residents can reserve the island to camp out over night - a super fun thing to do with your kids! During the Summer the town also runs a ferry called "cruise to nowhere" where you can take the boat, a picnic and watch the sun go down. Not far from the Ave is Greenwich Library, a huge and wonderful building with amazing collection of books etc. Also, at the top of the Ave is the YMCA with Olympic size indoor pool and various excersie and sports classes. Route 1, in Central Greenwich is packed with shops and restaurants as well, including a Whole Foods supermarket and a large Stop and Shop as well as Acme. Downtown Greenwich residential property tends to mainly be condos or town homes, although there are stand alone homes as well on small plots. There are a few areas that are an exception to this, such as Mead Point, which is a private association very near to the Ave with many waterfront properties on larger land. Belle Haven Association is also not too far from downtown Greenwich, located on the water and home to the Belle Haven Club, it's a beautiful private association with high end homes.
